Pamphlet - Dealing With a Sudden Death

The Ottawa Police Service partnered with Victim Assistance Services of Ottawa Carleton (VASOC) to develop a formal referral process to increase victim safety and referrals.

A pamphlet called Dealing With a Sudden Death was also created for front-line responders working with families experiencing the sudden loss of a family member or friend. The pamphlet provides practical information, anda list of community resources for victims of crime and trauma.

Pamphlet - Are You A Victim of Youth Crime?

Changes in the Youth Criminal Justice Act prompted Timmins and District Victim Crisis Assistance & Referral Service (VCARS) to work with local Crowns, police and other justice stakeholders to ensure victims of youth crime receive the supports and services they need.

The project included presentations, training and workshops for police, local service providers and VCARS volunteers. A training manual, survey tool for victims and a pamphlet, called "Are You A Victim of Youth Crime?" were produced.

Protocol - Short-term counselling for victims of traumatic crime

The London Interfaith Counselling Centre led this project to develop a new protocol to provide immediate access to short-term counselling for victims of traumatic crime.

The participants were selected by the London Police Family Consultant/Victim Services Unit because they otherwise could not have afforded counselling.

VCARS/OPP Adult Education Module and Police Training Manual

The Ontario Network of Victim Service Providers partnered with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to develop a community response for victims of crime.

The project included the development of:

  • A VCARS website (link to site)
  • Police training manuals
  • Adult education training guides
  • CD-Roms
  • Brochures

In addition, multiple VCARS/OPP training sessions and two train-the-trainer adult education seminars were held.

Report - Examining links between violence in the media and crime
The Canadian Safe School Network (CSSN) led this project to examine potential linkages between violence portrayed in the media and criminal activity. A report was produced containing recommendations on ways to prevent crime by reducing the prevalence of violent media content.

Workbook - Enhancing Our Community Response to Violence

The Victim Services Committee of Leeds & Grenville led this project to create a workbook that covers a number of topics, including:

  • Sexual assault
  • Domestic violence
  • Children in need of protection
  • Elder abuse
  • Developmental disabilities
  • Mental illness
  • Victimization

Workshops were held for service providers in Leeds & Grenville to raise awareness of victims' needs, and encourage more collaboration between agencies.

Report - Break and Enter: Assessing the Impact of Home Invasion

The Family Consultant/Victim Services Unit of the London Police Service led this project to assess the impact of home invasion and help victims recover.

The organization worked to empower victims by teaching crime prevention techniques and also providing community referrals.

Training Manual - First Nations cultural awareness

The Manitoulin Northshore Victim Crisis and Referral Service (VCARS) led this project to increase awareness of victim service programs in eight First Nation communities in Manitoulin and Northshore.

As part of the project, a First Nations volunteer network was created and a training manual for victim service providers, called Respecting and Honouring Traditional Culture, was produced.

Report - Helping First Nations Victims of Crime
The Six Nations Police Service worked with local community agencies to better help First Nations victims of crime in a culturally sensitive manner by encouraging greater collaboration and coordination. A literature review and report were produced.

Information for new police officers about victim services

Victim Services of Haldimand & Norfolk worked with two Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachments to create a Victim Resource Room in each station. A resource manual was developed containing information for new officers about the role and value of victim services.

A two-day workshop brought together 19 local victim service agencies to share information and encourage coordination to better help victims of crime.

A website and guidebook were also developed for victims.

Innovative Management System for Victim Services

Victim Services of Peel (VSOP) developed a database called the Innovative Management System (IMS) to seamlessly transfer certain appropriate information from the Peel Regional Police to the VSOP client database.

IMS enhances the efficiency of victim service delivery and allows VSOP to better track results.

Screening tool and curriculum for children whose caregivers suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and addictions
Catholic Family Services of Peel Dufferin held treatment groups for women suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse. Programs were also provided for their children, and a screening tool and curriculum were developed to assist them.

Report - When Teens Hurt Teens

The Centre for Children and Families in the Justice System (formerly known as London Family Court Clinic) and the London Police Service collaborated on a study of violent crime committed by youth against other youth.

The goal was to promote a coordinated, consistent and effective response to youth victims, witnesses and families involved with the criminal justice system as a result of violent youth crime.

A report and series of fact sheets, called When Teens Hurt Teens, were produced. The fact sheets cover support programs and deal with the implications of teen violence for:

  • Police
  • Prosecutors
  • Child Witnesses

Victim Services of Peel assembled a wealth of information for victims of crime.

Gathered from 150 service organizations in Peel Region, the material was distributed as REACH (Research, Education, Advocacy and Community Help) packages to over 3,000 community organizations and service providers in Peel. Service catalogues were also produced.
