Pamphlet: Breaking down barriers
Report: A study of community services for female Chinese victims of domestic violence

Chinese Family Services of Ontario worked with the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter, Metro Toronto Chinese & Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, and South Riverdale Community Health Centre to develop a cross-sectoral collaboration model and best practices between Chinese and mainstream service providers, public institutions and community members.

Its goal is to break down barriers facing Chinese Canadian victims of domestic violence. The project also raises awareness of domestic violence among Chinese-Canadian women and enhances their knowledge of how to respond.

Brochure - Violence prevention information for Somali woman
Northwood Neighbourhood Services delivered workshops to Somali women to raise awareness of domestic violence in their community, and to develop a suitable service model for these women. Brochures were produced in the Somali language containing violence prevention information for women.

Brochure, workshop material and booklets for abused Vietnamese women
The Vietnamese Association of Toronto hired a part-time victims of crime coordinator to run a series of workshops to inform Vietnamese women of Toronto-area services for domestic violence victims. A coordinating committee was created to make linkages with appropriate services for adult women. Brochures, booklets and workshop materials are available.

Domestic Violence Prevention Strategy and Booklet: A guide to the Tamil community
Vasantham - A Tamil Seniors Wellness Centre, Inc, led this project to guage awareness of spousal abuse in Toronto's Tamil community, and determine best practices to inform and educate. A domestic violence prevention strategy and booklet were produced.

Research Report: Awareness and prevention of victimization in the African-Canadian community in Peel

African Community Services of Peel led this project to determine whether women and children in Peel's African-Canadian community understand the meaning of victimization.

The project also gauged awareness of existing support services, and developed strategies to improve access. The group produced a research report to inform the African-Canadian community about victimization issues.

Pamphlet Family Safety, Family Harmony (available in multiple languages)

The Muslim Family Safety Project produced a culturally sensitive pamphlet dealing with violence against women. The pamphlet targets Muslim women and men, and service providers such as police who assist abused women.

The pamphlet provides a Muslim perspective on violence and has been translated into six languages commonly spoken by Muslim Canadians.

Report: Incest awareness and education for the South Asian community
India Rainbow Community Services of Peel (Mississauga) led this project about incest in the South Asian community. The project included information and resource collection, a PowerPoint presentation, report, community outreach and a conference.

Pamphlets: Legal information for women experiencing violence

Muslim Community Services (MCS) led this project to improve services for abused Muslim women and children. It did so by encouraging community involvement in developing a coordinated response to domestic violence and child abuse.

MCS worked with police, lawyers, community organizations and service providers to develop information sessions, educational workshops, radio shows and a community forum to help reduce violence against women and children. A resource guide for women in the Greater Toronto Area was produced, as well as four pamphlets titled:

  2. Important terms and what they mean
  3. Custody issues for immigrant and refugee women
  4. What is woman abuse?

Cross-cultural Care Cards© - A counselling tool in the form of a deck of cards

The Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO) developed a unique tool for working with immigrants and refugees.

The Cross-Cultural Care Cards© project is a counselling tool in the form of a deck of cards to help immigrants and refugees who are victims of war and torture. The cards can be adapted for front-line workers in a variety of fields. An instructional pamphlet and manual were also developed.
