Ten New Justices Of The Peace Appointed

The province has appointed 10 new justices of the peace to the Ontario Court of Justice effective October 13, 2010.

Justice of the Peace Peter Muir Aharan has been the executive director of St. Leonard’s Community Services London and Region for 20 years. He served as a member of the London Police High Risk Offender Advisory Committee, as well as a probation and parole officer for the Ontario Ministry of Correctional Services. Justice of the Peace Aharan has been an instructor in the Police Foundations Program at Fanshawe College and a guest lecturer at the University of Western Ontario.  He has been active for two decades in the United Way Campaign for the London and Middlesex area and has been involved with Neighbours, Friends and Families, an initiative that raises awareness about violence against women. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Aharan to London in the West region.

Justice of the Peace Charles William Anderson has been a member of the Brantford Police Service for 29 years serving in several capacities including oversight of public complaints in the Professional Standards Branch. For many years, he served as president, vice-president, and as a board member with St. Leonard’s Community Services. Justice of the Peace Anderson has taught criminal law at a community college and the Ontario Police College and has been an active member of the Glen Morris Lions Club, participating in fund raising and youth initiatives in the local community. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Anderson to Hamilton in the Central West region.

Justice of the Peace Anna Marie Hampson was called to the bar in 1986 and, prior to becoming a sole practitioner in 2005, practised with Squire, Hampson for nine years, primarily in family law and criminal defence work. She has acted as a panel lawyer for the Office of the Children’s Lawyer, and as a per diem Crown attorney, prosecuting Provincial Offences Act matters in Oxford County, London and Sarnia. Justice of the Peace Hampson has been a member of the board of directors of the Children’s Aid Society of London and Middlesex and a member of the University of Western Ontario Health Sciences Research Ethics Board. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Hampson to London in the West region.

Justice of the Peace Michael Dennis Hurst most recently served as CEO of The Detroit River Tunnel Partnership.  He was Mayor of the City of Windsor from 1991 to 2003 and a city council member prior to that. Previously, he was a partner with the law firm of Bondy, Kuzak, Riggs and Hurst. For nearly four decades, he has been actively involved in his community and received a number of honourary memberships in various organizations to recognize his contributions.  In 2003, Justice of the Peace Hurst received the prestigious Windsor Spirit of Philanthropy Award.  Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Hurst to Windsor in the West region.

Justice of the Peace Ann Margaret Johnson has been a bail supervisor for over 24 years in Toronto and York Region. She is actively involved in her community and has been a youth coordinator with the Queensville United Church for several years.  She has served on the East Gwillimbury Community Action Advisory Committee and as chair of the School Council for Holland Landing Public School in the York Region District School Board.  Justice of the Peace Johnson also co-chaired the York Region and South Simcoe Human Services and Justice Coordination Committee. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Johnson to Newmarket in the Central East region.

Justice of the Peace Christina Louise Logue has worked for the Ottawa Police Service since 1994. Most recently she acted as manager of a new Ottawa Police Service Youth Strategy Office where she oversaw the implementation of prevention, intervention, diversion and educational initiatives for at-risk youth. She also was director of the National Intervention/Diversion Program with the RCMP.  Justice of the Peace Logue has lectured at numerous conferences and has held volunteer positions with several community groups, including board member of the Community Care Access Center, president of the Wabano Center for Aboriginal Health and National Advisory Panel Member for the RCMP National Crime Prevention Services. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Logue to Ottawa in the East region.

Justice of the Peace Jill Ellen Morris has worked with the Victim Services Secretariat’s Victim/Witness Assistance Program since 2006, providing support, information and referrals for victims of crime. She was a sessional professor at Algoma University, teaching social welfare and was involved with bringing the Neighbours, Friends and Families initiative to her community, an initiative that raises awareness about violence against women.  She is a registered social worker with Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment Certification and has received First Nations Cultural Awareness Training. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Morris to Sault Ste. Marie in the Northeast region.

Justice of the Peace Karim Premji has spent the last 11 years working in the private sector as manager of Internet Business Development for Allstate Canada Group.  Prior to that, he worked for the Financial Services Commission of Ontario as a senior rate analyst. Justice of the Peace Premji has been a Toastmaster, serving as a district officer, club president and area governor. A long-time active volunteer in the Shia Ismaili Muslim community in the Greater Toronto Area, he also served on the international committee of the Heritage Discovery Program during the Golden Jubilee of his Highness, the Aga Khan.  Justice of the Peace Premji has also volunteered his time and talents with Toronto Youth Games. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Premji to the Toronto region.

Justice of the Peace Latly Vu comes from a career in the human resources field, most recently as a self-employed human resources consultant.  She was a multicultural assessor for the Toronto District School Board and a labour relations manager for the Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest. She has volunteered with several community agencies including the Vietnamese Association of Toronto, where she gave advice on the human resource, resettlement and integration issues faced by refugees and new immigrants. Justice of the Peace Vu has taken courses in criminal, civil and international law. She has been a member of the Toronto Employment Equity Practitioners Association, the Ontario College of Teachers and the Association of Multicultural Education of Ontario. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Vu to the Toronto region.

Justice of the Peace Ruby Tak Cheung Wong was called to the bar in 1987 and, before becoming a sole practitioner in Toronto in January 2010, she was a partner with Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP and Goodman and Carr LLP.  She has been a member on the board of governors for Seneca College and the board of directors of JVS Toronto, a non-profit organization that helps those from diverse backgrounds identify their goals and develop skills to achieve success in work and life. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Wong to the Toronto region.
