Sioux Lookout To Benefit From New Courthouse

A new Sioux Lookout satellite courthouse is improving access to justice for the local community and surrounding area.
The new Ontario Court of Justice facility includes:
- A modern courtroom with special hearing impaired equipment
- Four group holding cells, a motions room, an intake office and a conference room
- Available office space for the Victim/Witness Assistance Program and other victims’ services, Legal Aid Ontario, and Crown attorney
- Improved accessibility for people with disabilities
- Judicial chambers and justice of the peace offices.
The new courthouse will open in October 2010 providing services to approximately 15,000 people living in isolated communities linked by air to Sioux Lookout.

Quick Facts
- A satellite court provides limited court services in remote communities in conjunction with a main court site.
- Ontario provided $7.1 million to support the construction of the courthouse.
- The Sioux Lookout court is one of the busiest satellite courts among the three dozen in the region.
- This new facility was built to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification which includes strict regulations for energy management and conservation.
- A vacant 1930s provincial heritage property at 18-4th Avenue was doubled in size from 8,277 square feet to 16,716 square feet to accommodate the new courthouse.
