Chatham-Kent Police Can Now Better Monitor Unlawful Activity

Civil Forfeiture Helping Local Police Boost Public Safety

The Chatham-Kent Police Service will soon have a state-of-the-art video camera system to monitor unlawful activity and make the community safer.

With support from the Civil Remedies Grant Program, local police have additional equipment to monitor outlaw motorcycle gang members.

This grant program, created under the Civil Remedies Act, allows money to be taken out of the hands of wrongdoers and used to support the prevention of unlawful activity.

• The Chatham-Kent Police Service is receiving $32,157 for a new high-tech video camera system.
• Since November 2003, $13.4 million has been forfeited to the Crown under provincial civil forfeiture law.
• Civil forfeiture proceeds have funded approximately $1.2 million in compensation to direct victims of unlawful activity and $5.7 million in grants to law enforcement agencies from funds remaining after victims have been compensated.
