McGuinty Government Increases Support To Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic

July 22, 2010

News

Improved access to legal services will help more female victims of abuse in Ontario break the cycle of violence.

Ontario is providing $50,000 in additional funding to the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic. The funds will help to provide legal services to women who have experienced violence such as partner assault, sexual assault or childhood sexual abuse.

In 2009, the clinic provided specialized legal services to 738 victims of domestic violence, more than doubling its target of 300.

Quotes

"The Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic has been providing important services for many years to Toronto women who have been victims of violence. This funding will help the clinic provide legal expertise to more women in their time of need."
— Chris Bentley, Attorney General

"We are very pleased that the government has provided more funding to our clinic. It will allow us to help even more women who have suffered violence and abuse, and give them the tools to turn their lives around."
— Amanda Dale, Executive Director, Barbra Schlifer Clinic

Quick Facts

  • This one-time funding is in addition to the $300,000 provided annually by the ministry. Other ministries help to fund counselling, transition support and interpreter services.
  • The clinic is named after Barbra Schlifer, a young lawyer who was murdered in 1980 on the day she was called to the Bar. Established in 1985, the clinic continues Barbra’s commitment to social justice and services to women.
