The province has appointed four new justices of the peace to the Ontario Court of Justice in the Toronto Region. In total, 13 justice of the peace appointments have been made across Ontario and will be effective on October 14, 2009.
Her Worship Wendy Elizabeth Johanna Agnew has worked in education since 1989. Most recently, Justice of the Peace Agnew served as Principal of Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School. She has also served as Principal of St. Dorothy Catholic Elementary School. She is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and the Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario. Her Worship has been involved with First Nations, Métis and Inuit initiatives for the Toronto Catholic District School Board and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Learning Enrichment Foundation and the Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario. Her Worship has been appointed as a full-time presiding justice of the peace. Associate Chief Justice-Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Agnew to Toronto.
Her Worship Marilyn Churley has worked as an environment and community research and development consultant since 2006. Prior to that, Justice of the Peace Churley was the Member of Provincial Parliament for Toronto-Danforth for 15 years. During that time, she served as Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations and Registrar General of Ontario. Her Worship also served as Deputy Speaker and served as Deputy Leader of the New Democratic Party of Ontario. She has also been a Toronto City Councillor. She is also a member of Equal Voice, a multi-partisan, non-profit organization that works to elect more women to every level of government in Canada. Her Worship has been appointed as a full-time presiding justice of the peace. Associate Chief Justice-Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Churley to Toronto.
His Worship Gregory John Fantino has been senior vice president of Marsh Canada Limited since March 2008. Prior to that, Justice of the Peace Fantino worked for Gallagher Lambert Group where he became partner and was managing director of the firm’s corporate risk division from 2000 to 2007. He is a long-standing member of the Insurance Institute of Canada and has been a member of the Canadian Council for Private-Public-Partnerships since 2005. He has been involved in fundraising for a number of local charities, including Universal Youth Foundation, The Hospital for Sick Kids Foundation and ProAction Cops & Kids, a non-profit organization aimed at increasing mutual trust and respect between police and at-risk youth. His Worship has been appointed as a full-time presiding justice of the peace. Associate Chief Justice-Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Fantino to Toronto.
Her Worship Carolyn Rosemary Humeniuk has been a prosecutor as well as a court and tribunal agent with the City of Brampton since 1999. Prior to that, Justice of the Peace Humeniuk was a prosecutor for the City of Toronto. She is also trained in alternative dispute resolution through the ADR Institute of Ontario, Inc. As an active member of the community, she has been a volunteer canvasser for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind since 2002 and is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 66. Her Worship has been appointed as a full-time presiding justice of the peace. Associate Chief Justice-Coordinator of Justices of the Peace John A. Payne has assigned Justice of the Peace Humeniuk to Toronto.
Justices of the peace are judicial officers appointed pursuant to the Justices of the Peace Act. These appointees have been interviewed by the Justices of the Peace Appointments Advisory Committee, established through the Access to Justice Act, 2006.
