Second Phase Of Justice On Target Tackles Busiest Courts

McGuinty Government Targets Delay At Old City Hall And Brampton Courts

June 1, 2009

News

Ontario is taking the next step in reducing criminal court delay by moving the Justice on Target strategy into two of the province's busiest criminal courthouses - Brampton and Old City Hall.

These courthouses have been designated as new "Action Sites" to improve the pace of justice as part of Justice on Target, the province's intensive, sustained effort to reduce unproductive criminal court delays and appearances by making more effective use of justice resources.

This builds on the successful work already underway at the three Phase 1 Action Sites - London, Newmarket and North York - where local justice participants worked to develop seven initiatives that will get criminal cases to the decision points faster, and ensure resources are focused on the cases that need them most.

Quotes

"We are making steady progress in improving the way the criminal justice system works because of the dedication and commitment of local justice participants across the province. Brampton and Old City Hall courthouses are some of the busiest courts in the province, and their addition to the Phase 1 Action Sites is a significant step in our Justice on Target strategy."
- Chris Bentley, Attorney General

Quick Facts

  • The Justice on Target strategy sets a four-year target to reduce by 30 per cent the provincial average number of days and appearances required to complete a criminal case.
  • A 30 per cent reduction by 2012 will mean half-a-million fewer court appearances every year simply to adjourn the proceedings to another date.
