Maureen Armstrong has been appointed as the new Chair of Ontario's Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, effective August 21, 2008.

In her 13-year legal career, Armstrong has focused on transforming social justice organizations to meet public needs and expectations. Most recently, she was vice president of Central and Eastern Region at Legal Aid Ontario working to re-design legal aid service delivery for low-income Ontarians. She has extensive experience addressing the needs of victims looking for timely resolution of disputes having worked many years with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Her leadership helped the Commission reduce the time taken to complete human rights complaints by more than half.

Armstrong received her Bachelor of Laws Degree from Queen's University in 1992, and was called to the Bar in 1995. She is a member of the Association of Professional Executives of the Public Service of Canada and received a post-graduate degree in human rights law from the Instituto de Derechos Humanos at Complutense University in Madrid, Spain in 1999.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Board is a quasi-judicial independent agency of the Ministry of the Attorney General, established under the Compensation For Victims of Crime Act. The role of the Board is to award financial compensation to victims of violent crime committed in Ontario.
