On March 6, 2008, Attorney General Chris Bentley spoke about the challenge and opportunity facing Ontario's criminal justice system.

TRANSCRIPT

Over the past four years a number of significant investments have been made in all parts of our justice system.  The result is more police, more crowns, more judges and justices of the peace, new courthouses, and better crime prevention programming.

It is now time to ensure that our justice system, with its additional resources, is working as effectively as we need it to.  We have noticed, for example, that the number of court appearances it takes to reach the same result has doubled.

There are a number of initiatives we will be implementing, utilizing the best advice and ideas, to reduce unnecessary appearances, refocus resources, and improve the effectiveness of the system.

This is our challenge, and our opportunity.
