December 10, 2007

QUEEN'S PARK – Attorney General Chris Bentley joins Barbara Hall, Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission and Michael Gottheil, Chair of the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, in the Ontario Legislature to mark International Human Rights Day.  December 10th is the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Ontario's Human Rights Code — the first comprehensive human rights code in Canada — is based on this declaration.  Ontario led the way in promoting human rights when it enacted the Code in 1962, and the McGuinty government is continuing this leadership by moving forward to implement a stronger human rights system under the Human Rights Code Amendment Act, 2006.
