The McGuinty government is investing $6 million in 69 community-based agencies across Ontario this year, through the Community Grants Program. These grants will allow organizations to develop and enhance services and resources to help victims of crime.

The grants are part of a $15.1 million three-year program, provided through the Victims' Justice Fund. This fund is dedicated to providing services for victims of crime. Money for the fund is collected through a provincial surcharge, which is applied to all fines under the Provincial Offences Act (except parking violations). Federal fine surcharge revenues are also collected for the fund.

This year, for the first time, members of the Office of Victims of Crime participated in regional committees across the province to review applications and suggest projects to be funded. The Office of Victims of Crime is an independent agency of the Ministry of the Attorney General, which advises the Attorney General on ways to ensure that the principles set out in the Victims' Bill of Rights are respected. It also offers advice in other areas, including the use of the Victims' Justice Fund to provide and improve services for victims.
