VICTIMS' JUSTICE FUND GRANTS TO HELP VICTIMS OF CRIME

Backgrounder

For Immediate Release
October 21, 2005

The government is investing in community-based agencies across Ontario to provide services and resources that empower victims of crime to rebuild their lives. Over $3.1 million is being made available through the Community Grants Program in 2005-2006 to support 71 agencies and fund the most promising local projects.

These grants are being provided through the Victims' Justice Fund (VJF). Money for the VJF is collected through a provincial victim surcharge, which is applied to all fines under the Provincial Offences Act (except parking violations). Federal fine surcharge revenues are also collected for this fund. Money collected through the victim fine surcharge is dedicated to providing services for victims of crime.
