TORONTO — Attorney General Michael Bryant today announced the appointment of Madam Justice Annemarie E. Bonkalo as an Associate Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice, effective May 18, 2005.
"Madam Justice Bonkalo brings a wide range of experience to her new role on the bench," said Bryant. "I am confident that she will strengthen the administration of justice in the province of Ontario."
Justice Bonkalo was called to the bar in 1978 and joined the Ministry of the Attorney General as an assistant Crown attorney for Brampton. She was a member of the executive of the Ontario Judges Association and a member of the Constitutional Committee and chair of the Mentor Committee. She was also the administrative judge at the College Park court in Toronto.
She was the Chief Justices' representative on the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee and was appointed as regional senior judge for the Toronto region on September 1, 2004.
Justice Bonkalo was appointed as a judge to the Provincial Court (Criminal Division) in 1990 and has presided in Brampton and Toronto.
