MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT RECEIVES REPORT ON THE POLICE COMPLAINTS SYSTEM

News Release

For Immediate Release
April 25, 2005

Report Made Available On The Ministry Of The Attorney General's Website

TORONTO — A report on Ontario's police complaints system was released to the public today by Attorney General Michael Bryant.

"The McGuinty government is committed to establishing a police complaints system that has the confidence of the public and the respect of police," said Bryant. "We realize a strong police complaints system that is fair and equitable to both the public and the police is enormously important to the people of Ontario."

The report was written by the Honourable Patrick J. LeSage, Q.C., who is a former chief justice of Ontario's Superior Court of Justice. LeSage presided over some of Ontario's most notable criminal and civil cases during his 28 years on the bench. He was appointed by the Ontario government to lead the review in June 2004.

"We would like to thank Mr. LeSage for taking on this difficult assignment and for his extensive efforts in engaging the public in consultations and carrying out this very thorough review of the police complaints system in Ontario," said Bryant. "Now that we have received his report, we look forward to reviewing his recommendations contained in it."

The full report is now available on the Ministry of the Attorney General's website at www.attorneygeneral.jus.gov.on.ca.
