ONTARIO GOVERNMENT DENOUNCES ANTI-MUSLIM MESSAGES AT RYERSON UNIVERSITY

News Release

August 11, 2004

TORONTO — The McGuinty government firmly denounces the continued appearance of threats targeted toward the Muslim population at Toronto's Ryerson University.

"The Ontario government does not tolerate racial discrimination, racial intolerance or hate crimes of any kind," said Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. "I strongly condemn these cowardly acts, which are an affront to Ontarians and our way of life."

"It is disturbing to again see this type of despicable behavior occurring at Ryerson," said Attorney General Michael Bryant. "I assure the students and school administration that your government will prosecute anyone charged — fairly and vigorously."

"Our laws guarantee the safety and security of all individuals and their protection from offences motivated by hatred," said Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Monte Kwinter. "I encourage more action on the part of all communities to confront racism in any form and work together to stamp it out — permanently."

It is Crown policy in Ontario that offences motivated by hate towards an identifiable group be prosecuted vigorously regardless of whether personal injury is involved. A team of 15 Crown attorneys, specially trained in hate crimes legislation and the prosecution of these offences, provides regional and local support to the police, other Crowns and communities across the province.
