TORONTO — The Ontario government has nominated criminal defence lawyer Janet Leiper as the new chair of Legal Aid Ontario (LAO), Attorney General Michael Bryant announced today.
"Janet Leiper brings extensive legal experience to the challenging position of chair of the LAO board," said Bryant. "I am confident she will make a tremendous contribution to improving access to justice in Ontario."
Leiper has been selected for a three-year term pending review by the Standing Committee on Government Agencies and the approval of the Lieutenant-Governor.
"Ms. Leiper has an excellent reputation and first-hand experience with clients who receive legal aid," said the Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada, Frank Marrocco, Q.C.
