The Violence Awareness Program for Women focuses on education and information for incarcerated women who report a history of victimization. Information on the effects of abuse and available community resources are provided. Other female inmates interested in the program content may also participate.
Research indicates that as many as 90% of women in Ontario who are in conflict with the law have experienced abuse at some point in their lives.
The Violence Awareness Program for Women is funded by the Victim Services Division and is administered by the Ministry of Correctional Services with the assistance of community-based agencies. The Victim Services Division currently funds 11 programs (10 adult and 1 young offender) in various institutions across the province.
