
The Ministry of the Attorney General is responsible for delivering justice services to Ontarians by:
MAG employs more than 1800 lawyers, and approximately 100 articling students and 70 summer law students. We specialize in almost every area of substantive law including aboriginal, constitutional, civil, criminal, health, environmental, family, tax, corporate, commercial, labour and employment. Many law student positions are located in the Greater Toronto Area or in one of our many offices located throughout Ontario. Specifically, the Court Services Division, Criminal Law Division, Family Justice Services Division, Legal Services Division and Policy Division all hire law students. Court Services Division (CSD) is the Ministry of the Attorney General's largest division and operates the largest and busiest court system in Canada, and one of the largest in North America. Law students working at CSD support the following three legal policy and programs branches - civil, family and criminal. For more information, view the Court Services Division office profile.
The Ontario Court of Appeal and the Superior Court of Justice also hire law students as part of their Clerkship programs. For further information about the Clerkship programs, please refer to the Ontario Courts website at www.ontariocourts.on.ca.
There are over 1000 Crown counsel in the Criminal Law Division who are responsible for prosecuting all criminal charges under the Criminal Code in all levels of courts in Ontario. Practicing exclusively criminal law, prosecutors work in local Crown Attorneys offices throughout the province. Many offices hire summer law and articling students. The Crown Law Office - Criminal is responsible for conducting all indictable appeals in both the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada. The office also conducts a significant body of trial work as well as litigation support work. The Crown Law Office - Criminal hires both summer law and articling students.

The Family Justice Services Division, comprised of approximately 60 lawyers, oversees the administration, coordination and delivery of the ministry's social justice programs across Ontario. Two key offices within the Family Justice Services Division are the Office of the Children's Lawyer and the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT).

The Legal Services Division (LSD) is the Government of Ontario's one-stop shop for expert and strategic legal services in all matters related to civil law. From aboriginal to environmental, constitutional to corporate/commercial, health to human rights, labour, finance, natural resources and much more, the Division's practice covers all substantive areas of the law. Our law students have the unique opportunity to explore and examine a wide range of files, including inquests, public inquiries, class actions, malicious prosecutions, and judicial reviews.
LSD is comprised of centralized branches such as the Constitutional Law Branch and Crown Law Office – Civil and 21 LSD Seconded Legal Services (SLS) branches located on-site with individual client ministries and in some specified agencies (such as Financial Services Commission of Ontario and the Environmental Review Tribunal). Counsel in the SLS branches and agencies are MAG employees seconded to client ministries and agencies.
