Who we are

Counsel working with the Legal Services Branch of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MEI) provide legal support to a variety of Ontario’s signature initiatives. These include:

  • The province’s electricity and energy planning initiatives such as the transition from coal to environmentally responsible sources of power (e.g. hydro and wind), and conservation measures such as the installation of smart electrical meters in Ontario by 2010.
  • Bill 150, the Green Energy Act and Green Economy Act, 2009 (known as the Green Energy Act or “GEA”), which represents a fundamental shift in Ontario toward the development of renewable energy generation from cleaner, greener sources of energy.
  • Implementation of the province’s award winning Greater Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan established under the Places to Grow Act.
  • Planning for and building new infrastructure such as transit initiatives, hospitals, courthouses and other public infrastructure.
  • Overseeing provincial interests in the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Initiative, a $1.5 billion tri-government collaboration with Waterfront Toronto and the Ontario Realty Corporation. Provincial interests focus on the West Don Lands, a brownfield site adjacent to Toronto's Distillery District, which is being transformed into a neighbourhood of vibrant public spaces and sustainable residential living.
  • The oversight and delivery of gaming activities in the province (horse racing, casinos and lotteries).
  • The management of the government’s considerable real estate portfolio.
  • Ontario’s capital planning and approvals process.
